As per usual at a big competition an England goalkeeper has made a mistake and the media have gone on a field day as if this is the most important story of all time. This has also sparked the argument that Joe Hart should have started in the first place.
Joe Hart is a fantastic keeper who has had a great season with Birmingham and I have enjoyed watching him. What impressed me most is his ability to throw himself around and to be able to save a shot you think is goal bound. The other thing that impresses me is that he is only young; in his early twenties he has a lot of time to improve and become a world great. As much as it is a cliché I think the world is his oyster especially as most goalkeepers find their best form in their thirties.
There is no doubt he has talent but I’m not sure if he should play for England in this world cup. What I feel is a problem is his age and his lack of experience which could be his biggest downfall. People often say if you are good enough you are old enough which is fair enough but football is a mental as well as a game of skill and if he were to make a mistake it could ruin him. Obviously I do not know him personally so I’m not sure how his mind works but I would be afraid that he could have the same experience as Scott Carson if he made a mistake.
For some reason unknown to man every time England are playing the media like to scrutinise players and find scapegoats if we do not play well. Often enough this a goalkeeper so should we be putting a young goalkeeper through that sort of pressure so soon? I would love to see him establish himself first and then dominate the next world cup as the number 1 choice. But for now I feel he should enjoy his time in South Africa and get experience in which he can build on and make a name for himself in the next World Cup or indeed the next Euro championships.
Of course goalkeepers have played at this age for their country and succeeded like Iker Casillas who started playing for his country from 19 (senior level) but we have to remember Iker was playing for Real Madrid who are a big team whereas Hart is playing for Birmingham. I believe Hart will play for a big team at some stage but I feel our media likes to criticise our players unfairly and I doubt Joe Hart has had this experience yet.
Who should play against Algeria? Robert Green as I feel as a nation we should stick behind him and show him that one mistake does not need to haunt for the rest of your career. As for Joe Hart I feel he should be our future not a quick fix and should take his time. Walk before you can run is my advice. Plenty of time Joe, enjoy it.
We would love to know your thoughts?
