Sunderland in race to sign David James

England’s David James is caught in a three-way battle for his services.

Today’s Sportsmail newspaper have revealed that there is interest from Fulham and Celtic in a battle to sign the veteran goalkeeper and now Sunderland have come back in after Ipswich made an offer for for their keeper Marton Fulop.

Manager Steve Bruce had initially considered offering just a short-term deal for James after losing Craig Gordon to a broken arm but the increasing likelihood of understudy Fulop’s departure has changed his thinking.

James, 39, who has seen an offer from Portsmouth withdrawn, knows Celtic may offer him a two-year deal while a move to Fulham would be the most appealing. The London club expect Mark Schwarzer to move to Arsenal, but when may depend on Martin Jol if he arrives as manager this week.

Ipswich are believed to have offered around £1.5million for Fulop, who has also interested West Brom.
