Green Misses Germany Date

West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green has been left out of Fabio Capello’s England squad to face Germany next week, despite impressing in front of the Italian on Saturday.

Capello was on hand to witness Green help his West Ham side keep their first clean sheet for 26 matches as the Hammers held Portsmouth to a 0-0 draw.

Green put in a fine display - twice denying Jermaine Defoe superbly - but it wasn’t enough for the 28-year-old to get the call from Capello. Scott Carson, Joe Hart and David James were given the nod, instead.

England face Germany in a friendly clash at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night.

The news will no doubt frustrate the former Norwich man, who has made his feelings clear at being left out of the national side.

He was completely overlooked by former manager Steve McClaren, and has yet to feature under Capello’s regime.

After being left out of the Italian’s first ever squad in February, Green wore gloves amusingly labelled “England’s Number Six” in a match for the Hammers.

Club manager Gianfranco Zola was happy to praise his stopper though as his side earned their first clean sheet of the season.

He told BBC Sport: “Robert Green was outstanding, I’m pleased for him as we concede a lot of goals and I’m sure it’s frustrating for him, but I think today made up for it.”
