Retirement On Hold For Edwin

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Saar says he has no plans to hang up his gloves just yet, despite turning 38 last month.

Many expect the veteran to retire at the end of the season, but the Dutchman insists he will not rush into a decision as he has “the best job in the world.”

He told Sky Sports News: “I am happy. The most important thing is to get the credit from the players and manager and that they are happy,”

“At 24, I thought ‘how long will I go on? To 34. Ten years will be fine’. When I came to 34, I was still enjoying it, still fit, and I wanted to play on.”

Van der Saar faces stiff competition for his place from Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak and has enjoyed a career spanning the best part of 18-years.

That figure may increase further when he reviews the situation at the end of the current campaign, but the former PSV man was keen to play down the achievement.

“What Ryan Giggs is doing, as an outfield player, is more of an achievement than a goalkeeper,” he added.
