> Shay’s back

Shay Given has urged the club’s board to heed manager Kevin Keegan’s warning by bringing in new players before the start of the season and settling Michael Owen’s future.

Republic of Ireland keeper Given, who is now back in action after missing the end of last season has spent most of the summer working to get fit again after his hernia problems, said: ‘We have got a couple of new lads in but I think we need a good few more. Given added: ‘He’s a quality player but if it takes another 6 months and he signs then so be it. Negotiations of that size don’t happen overnight.
